When one encounters a turmeric supplement, the nutrition label must be analyzed carefully to make sure you are getting an adequate amount of curcumin, the active ingredient.
Turmeric Root Nutrition Label
Turmeric root is 2-3% curcumin/curcuminoids by weight. This means that if you have 1000 mg of turmeric, then 20-30 mg will be curcuminoids.
If you need curcumin/curcuminoids for pain relief, then you will need about 1000 mg of curcuminoids at least twice daily. This means that using turmeric capsules you will need somewhere between 33,333-50,000 mg of turmeric at least twice a day. That is a lot of turmeric!
Turmeric extract is generally >95% curcuminoids. Therefore, it is easier to get your total dosage of curcuminoids with the extract form of turmeric versus turmeric root. It is always so important to read the nutrition label prior to purchasing a turmeric-containing supplement.
